Northern Viaduct Trust celebrates 20 years

July 3, 2009

It is 20 years since the Northern Viaduct trust was formed and it celebrates its anniversary with the opening of a new car park which it hopes will solve a problem for walkers accessing the Northern Viaduct Round Walk at Stenkrith Bridge on the Nateby Road.

The trust was set up to acquire, restore and maintain the 90ft high Smardale Gill viaduct which, crosses the  valley of Scandal Beck a few miles west of Kirkby Stephen in Cumbria.

Originally built in 1861,it carried coke to the iron and steel furnaces in the Barrow area and West Cumberland but closed in 1962 and was saved from demolition by the trust and money from British Rail.
