A chance to contribute to the “new” Bacup

July 6, 2009

Plans are afoot for a redevelopment  of Bacup.

The once prosperpous Mill town in the Rossendale valley has come in for criticism in recent years including being described as a place without any identity or role.

Earlier this year a report by Rossendale Borough council identified a number of core problems including, high numbers of vacant historic buildings,an ageing population and limited employment prospects.

It set out four options

1.to create a sustainable town based on tourism and employment setting up the town as being the hub of the valley’s tourist areas by 2020..

2.to develop the area as a regeneration priority encouraging vocational training opportunities.

3.to identify the area as being a hub for high tech and e based industry

4.to promote Bacup as an eco town

Residents will have a chance to comment and contribute on the new strategy at a meeting this Tuesday to be held at Stacksteads Methodist Church, Newchurch Road from 7pm to 8.30pm.
